Dog playing at Black Rock Sands

Top 5 things to do near Greenacres and on park

Greenacres Holiday Park in North Wales has a relaxed atmosphere with a stunning beach accessible straight from the park. With so much to do and see on park and in the local area, General Manager John Ryan gives his pick of the best things to do whilst staying here.

1. Relax on the beautiful beach

1. Relax on the beautiful beach

We’ve got without a doubt one of the most stunning beaches in the Haven family - Black Rock Sands. It’s two-and-a-half miles of sandy unspoilt beach, and either side of the beach you’ve got a castle. You’ve got Criccieth Castle and Harlech Castle either side you can see them both from the beach. It’s safe, it’s shallow, kids can play, it’s dog friendly as well.

You can drive onto the beach or walk from the park. We’ve got three or four walkways, so you can get yourself all loaded up and walk from your holiday home. The longest walk from any caravan is probably less than 10 minutes, or if you’re closer to the beachfront it’s two minutes. We really are right on the beach.

Portmeirion: awesome architecture in stunning surroundings

The reason why people come here is it’s a place where you have a base, where you can go and discover what is wonderful about this area. I’d recommend you go to Portmeirion, a town that was built in the Victorian times. It’s a very Italian looking place that's close by, right on the cliff front – you've never seen anything like it. You’ve got to see it to believe it- it’s just bonkers.

And there’s Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, almost 200 years old, with historic trains that travel between Porthmadog and Blaenau Ffestiniog. So you can catch the steam train from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - and visit the Slate Caverns and Zipworld. The Welsh Highland Railway will take you on a magical trip from Porthmadog, through the heart of the Snowdonia National Park to Caernarfon. You'll ride past the foot of Snowdon and see some amazing mountain scenery.

3. Relax and be entertained in the Marina Bar and Stage

3. Relax and be entertained in the Marina Bar and Stage
Comfy seating and a view of the stage and screen

Our Marina Bar and Stage is beautiful. It sits 950, so it’s not small, and it’s a flexible venue that splits up into two halves for different events. So you can come as a family unit, together, then the football fans will go off to the left and watch a match on TV, then to the right you’ve got the teeny weenies and the mums and dads who maybe don’t like football, who go and watch the acts and the entertainment or maybe Make a Bear, or watch a movie with the kids. And when we’ve got really really big shows or at the end of the evening, we open it all up so it’s just one big fun house. That’s unique.

Papa Johns is attached to it too so you can have pizza delivery to your van or while you sit there and wait. There’s also the Haven Serve app available in the Marina Bar and Stage, so you can sit at your table, order your drinks or pizza at your table, and they bring it to you.

It’s a wow factor, the Marina Bar and Stage. When you walk through the door it’s a wow.

Snowdonia: epicness at every turn

There are so many lakes and natural attractions around this area you wouldn’t believe. It’s amazing – Snowdonia National Park is right on your doorstep. For walkers, picnickers, there are quaint little villages, quaint little eateries, many are dog-friendly. There's the town of Beddgelert which has charming river walks, and Betws-y-Coed has some breathtaking scenery. So Greenacres can be your hub, where if you want to discover North Wales and have these wonderful moments, you come here. And when people do come here it feels – even at its busiest time – very relaxed. The pace of life definitely feels different.

5. Take part in the park’s activities

Fun guaranteed in our splashzones

There’s lots to do here. If you were to come with your kids, you could sit there with a cheeky beer or a cup of tea, and to the left you could see the kids playing crazy golf, in the middle there’s a simple play area, and over to the right-hand-side we’ve got our five-a-side football pitch.

And beyond that to the right there’s a SplashZone - a water activity area which is all free of charge to everyone - where on a summer’s evening the kids can just be in their swimming cozzies and run riot and have a great time just playing with water in a very safe environment whilst the parents relax. Within that area we’ve also got our archery ranges and bungee trampolines, and when you see a child having a nice time on it, it just makes other people want to have a go.

Why do you love Greenacres?

I think it is the beach. It is at most a 10-minute walk through the park, straight on the sand dunes, then over the sand dunes is the beach. If you’re at one of the front vans you can hear the roaring of the sea. You really are at one with nature. It’s a beautiful beach. I do the walk every morning with the dog and we love it.

The team here are like old friends and familiar faces and we like to employ as many local people as we can which makes such a difference, it gives you that valuable knowledge about the local area.
