Things to do in North Wales

If you're a surfer, kayaker or general adventurer, you can take your pick from fearsome tidal races or sheltered bays and estuaries. Sedately sail and paddle around in ravishing still lakes, or roar through whitewater rafting and kayaking. Smaller water babies can happily stick to the miles of sandy beaches, including the Blue Flag-worthy Black Rock Sands. The hidden cove of Porthor is known locally as Whistling Sands. Take a stroll to find out why, as you hear the beach singing – or whistling – as individual grains of sand rub against one another.

For a day off from big days out, try a breath-taking train journey through the Cambrian coastlines of Snowdonia National Park. Or go medieval on a castle visit: Beaumaris, Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech are all pristine examples of historical military architecture.
