Things to do in Taunton

One of the things that will make your Haven adventure to Somerset that little bit more special is a day out in Taunton, yet another terrific town in this great county.

Although this small town isn't as talked about as others in the area, it still has plenty of exciting attractions and experiences for all types of travellers. From spending quality time with your family at one of the many nearby parks to learning about local history at one of the many museums, here are some fun things to do in Taunton! Our Doniford Bay Holiday Park is just 17 miles from most of these gems.

1. The Museum of Somerset

1. The Museum of Somerset

One of the top places to visit in Taunton is the Museum of Somerset. Housed in a 12th-century castle, the museum features an extensive collection of objects and exhibits that tells the story of Somerset and how it became one of the richest counties in England. With about nine themed galleries onsite and many offsite exhibition spaces, there's a lot to see at this family-friendly museum. From a 200-million-year-old fossil, to art, armoury, and traditional costumes, to photography exhibitions and artwork by local artists - every day seems like a different experience!

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Make sure you pre-book for easy access. After touring, you can also indulge in your favourite snack or drink from the museum's courtyard cafe. Oh, and don't forget to purchase some gifts and souvenirs from their shop.

2. Vivary Park

2. Vivary Park

Escape the bustling town centre by visiting Vivary Park. It's hard to beat the old-world charm of this vast green space with gates, a bandstand and a shelter that date back to the 19th century. It's easy to find a perfect picnic spot near a war memorial, fountain, or bandstand. Vivary Park is simply a work of art. You can take a walk along the tree trail or Sherford Stream, soaking in all the fresh air and scents of the well-manicured gardens and flowers.

For something even more energetic, there's a tennis court and a pay-and-play mini-golf course within the park. Your kids will definitely have a tonne of fun in the adventure play area, and you can also bring your furry friends. Just make sure to keep them on a lead and clean up after them.

3. French Weir Park

This stunning spot along the River Tone is a popular place for locals and visitors alike. Situated on high ground and surrounded by water, it makes for a peaceful walk among beautiful green scenery.

The French Weir Park features an iconic 18th-century weir which helped to provide power to local mills. Today, the weir still stands tall as a testament to its original purpose while acting as one of the key focal points of this beautiful parkland. There's a lot to enjoy about this beautiful space with a comprehensive children's play area, open space for ball games, and a cafe.

For more adventure, you can swim in the river when it's safe or go kayaking or paddle boarding adventure.

At the heart of Taunton along Priory Avenue sits The Cooper Associates County Ground, home to Somerset County Cricket Club since 1882. Despite being a small ground, it can hold up to 6,500 spectators at any one time and is the best place to watch cricket in Somerset.

6. Orchard Shopping Centre

For those looking for something slightly more cultural than a shopping trip, The Orchard Shopping Centre is perfect. As well as a large number of stores, this centre also has a gym and a cinema. For those who need to spruce up for the next big social event, there's even an array of hair and beauty salons. There are plenty of opportunities to eat out with local pubs on either side of the mall, while if you fancy a more adventurous meal, then your best bet would be to visit one of the restaurants upstairs, which overlook Taunton's beautiful gardens.

The mall provides an excellent space for walking around and exploring, or it can be a great place to spend some time reading or relaxing during lunchtime too. Whether you want to shop, grab a bite to eat or catch up on the latest films, The Orchard Shopping Centre is where you should head.
