The annual get together started a generation ago when Kenny and Irene – parents to Kenneth, Victoria and Lynsey - first booked a family break at Craig Tara. Irene, who has settled in Frome, Somerset, said: ‘We had our first holiday there in 1975 when it was a Butlins camp. We were living in Glasgow at the time and it was the nearest seaside resort. Later we moved to Edinburgh and then to our home in Somerset – but we still went back each year to Ayrshire.
'Every year when it came to booking a family holiday it was an easy decision. Kenny and I knew where we'd have a good time and where we could be sure the kids would enjoy themselves. It was straight to Ayrshire and we went every single Whitsun until 1998.
'This was the year the resort became a Haven holiday park and the children were all grown up...and old enough to make their own holiday decisions.
Perhaps it was something in the Ayr - but Kenneth (named after his dad), Victoria and Lynsey couldn't resist the lure of their favourite holiday destination and just carried on going. What’s more they encouraged other relatives to join them and the Stuart family holiday tradition began to spread.
'Most of them still live in Glasgow,' said Irene 'And several of them have now bought their own caravans at Craig Tara so they can go as often as they like.' But Whitsun remains a highlight of the year when the whole family get together for their annual reunion. The Stuarts book at least five caravans and Kenneth and his sisters, Lynsey (32) and Victoria (25) insist that the holiday is well worth the seven hour drive from their homes in Frome.
'It's always great,' said Ken. 'We enjoy catching up with each other and in the evening we put two or three tables together in the ShowBar so we can all be together.'
This year Ken, and his partner Stacey who between them had two daughters became the proud parents of their first son. And another family tradition was continued when they decided to call him Kenneth Joshua – after his dad and his grandfather.
And at Whitsun four week old baby Kenneth became the third generation of Kenneth Joshua Stuarts to visit Craig Tara.
This year's holiday, though, was touched by both joy and sadness. For many members of the family it was the first time they had seen baby Kenneth. But the family also held a poignant ceremony on the beach to scatter the ashes of Irene's husband Kenny who died earlier this year.
It was the first time Irene had been back to Craig Tara in ten years but it was her husband's wish that his remains be scattered there.
Irene said: 'He was so attached to Craig Tara and we had so many happy holidays there. In fact it's likely that both our daughters were conceived there as their birthdays are only one day apart. And we both loved the view looking out to the Isle of Arran.'
Now Irene's been back, she said: 'I've decided I'm going to join my children and my grandchildren for their annual reunion. They've made some changes at the park, replacing the old chalets with modern caravans but it's still a wonderful place. And I'm looking forward to spending the time with our extended family and see all the kids growing up."
In fact Haven have spent more than £30 million on the park in recent years building a new golf course, improving accommodation and landscaping.
As well as having a chance to get together with the extended family, the Stuart family also take time to enjoy Craig Tara's large multi-level heated indoor pool with flumes and slides, ten-pin bowling and Haven's renowned programme of evening entertainment with cabaret acts and live bands.
Last year Craig Tara celebrated its 60th anniversary as a holiday venue. A Wren's camp HMS Scotia in the war, the site opened as a Butlins holiday camp in 1947. In the early years the Redcoats wore kilts and campers were woken every morning by sound of pipers.
Today it is one of Haven's all-action parks with a wide range of sports and leisure activities on offer plus a full programme of entertainment. It remains one of only two Haven parks to offer great value half-board accommodation including full English breakfasts and three course evening meals.
